9 Free Metabolism Boosters

There are a lot of products on the market which are touted as improving your metabolism and thereby helping you lose weight. Often these products have dubious effectiveness, and can cost a lot of money. Here are some totally free methods that can fire your metabolism up and get you burning fat.

Eat spicy foods

Hot ingredients such as capsicum peppers, chili peppers, ginger, horseradish and wasabi have been shown to increase your metabolism for several hours after consumption. Warning: this is not an excuse to eat a fat-laden lamb bhuna!

Drink plenty of water

There’s a myth floating around that drinking ice cold water will cause you to burn more calories, as your body will have to expend energy warming the water up. Sounds good, but there’s absolutely zero evidence to back this up!

But that doesn’t mean that water isn’t important for weight loss. Keeping properly hydrated will improve your energy levels, aid digestion, and assist your body in flushing out toxins and fat.

Eat more frequently

Eating smaller, more frequent meals helps to stabilise blood sugar, leaves you less hungry (and therefore less likely to give in to temptation) and raises metabolism by helping the body digest the food and turn it into energy more quickly.

De-stress

When we are stressed, our bodies produce a hormone called Cortisol which can affect metabolic function. If a lot of Cortisol is produced, this can cause weight gain. Try to take some time each day to de-stress with a long walk, a good book, a relaxing bath, a manicure, meditation or anything else – non-food-related of course!

Build muscle

You’ve probably heard it said before that “muscle burns more than fat” or “muscle weighs more than fat”. Not very scientific, but simply put, muscle cells require more energy than fat cells even while the body is at rest. Add some strength training to your cardio and you will find your lean muscle mass increasing and your daily calorie burn increasing along with it.

Get plenty of sleep

While we sleep, our bodies repair muscle or other tissue which is injured. Muscle can only be built by tearing it and rebuilding it (which is why you ache after a strength workout or unaccustomed exercise.) This process cannot be efficient if you aren’t getting enough sleep. As explained above, lean muscle mass will help you burn more calories per day.

Increase your protein intake

Instead of a bag of chips, have some greek yoghurt, cottage cheese or grilled chicken breast as a snack. Protein is harder for the body to digest, so you burn more energy just eating it. Also, protein is essential for building lean muscle mass.

Cut out sugar

While it may give you a quick energy boost, refined sugar sends your blood sugar levels spiking and then crashing, which throws your metabolism into havoc. Instead of a cupcake, reach for an apple or orange instead. It will release its sugar more slowly, giving you a sustained energy boost without the corresponding crash.

Move about more

Studies have shown that people who fidget more can burn up to a third more calories than those who are naturally still. Whilst it would be difficult (and potentially irritating!) to develop fidgety habits, it is good to move around more often – particularly if you have a desk job or spend most of your day in school. Make the most of every opportunity to move – go to the water cooler at least once an hour, get up and walk around during the commercial break, take a walk at lunchtime instead of sitting and watching TV. If you’re stuck in traffic in your car, devise an upper body dance workout to go along with whatever you’re listening to. I have to admit this has earned me some curious looks from fellow motorists!

Keep all these tips in mind, and you can increase your metabolism – without spending a penny.
